Interview: Neil Talks Lohan

The Shaolin Eighteen Lohan Palm Lineage

GRANDMASTER CHEN QI MING (1953-2022) taught that our Lohan lineage originated in Southern Shaolin Temple in Henan’s Sung Mountains. In 1647, when the Southern Shaolin Temple was destroyed by the Qing Dynasty, its surviving masters scattered across China and a few travelled into Tibet.

SOUTHERN SHAOLIN LOHAN PALM survived in Tibet until a Tibetan Lama traveled to Guangzhou, China in the 1970s to visit Chinese Buddhist monks. When the Lama fell ill, Grandmaster Chen—who was a doctor of Traditional Chinese Medicine—cared for him and restored him to health. In gratitude and recognition, the Lama taught Grandmaster Chen the Shaolin Eighteen Lohan Palm, blended with elements of Tibetan Buddhist practice. He practiced Lohan Palm for the rest of his life. Grandmaster Chen emigrated to Canada in 2003.

NEIL RIPSKI—who teaches the Eighteen Lohan Online Course—trained with Grandmaster Chen as an Inner-Door Disciple from 2003 until 2022.

Testimonials

  • Rod Keen, Royal Canadian Mounted Police

I have known Neil Ripski for approximately six years. Neil has an extremely strong work ethic. His mastery of Kung Fu and the fact that his skills in that field have garnered him an international audience, speak clearly to this. In a short number of years, Neil has created a thriving community of martial arts students. I know a number of Neil’s students personally, and he is held in high regard and has garnered a great deal of respect and admiration amongst his students and peers.

From a law enforcement standpoint, I have been a member of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police for ten years, seven of those years as a general duty police officer. I had the opportunity, prior to getting to know Neil on a personal level, to sit in on one of his classes. As I am a large person, 6’4” and 300 plus pounds, I was curious to see if I had any chance of getting the better of Neil in a simulated hand to hand combat type situation. I can say that despite my size and police training, I did not stand a chance against Neil.

I have been practicing martial arts since '84, mainly Taiji Quan. I was already certified as a Taiji instructor, and around '09 I decided that I wanted to become a professional martial arts instructor. I first saw Sifu on Youtube. I was especially impressed by his Chen Taiji[…] I sent Sifu videos of myself practicing forms and applications (and lots more questions), until it became obvious that if I really wanted to take my training to the next level I would need to train with him personally in Canada.

I spent 6 weeks with Sifu training hard in the beautiful natural surroundings and making many new friends. Sifu has a shockingly wide education in Chinese martial arts, and I kept tweaking my schedule to fit in interesting content as I discovered it. I wound up studying not only Drunken Fist, but also Sifu's Baguazhang and Lohan. Because of my previous experience in the martial arts I managed to learn a lot in 6 weeks, but I really wish I had 6 months!
